Senior Manager, Software Engineering

NCARB is searching for a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to provide thought leadership, technical guidance, and growth to a high-performing, talented team of technical professionals.  This position reports to the Vice President, Information Systems and is responsible for daily management of the software engineering team’s short and long-term objectives while also providing vision and fostering collaboration and alignment with NCARB’s technology strategy.

The department, with a healthy annual budget, is a high performing team that uses the latest technology and engineering best practices. The team uses the scrum agile methodology with 2-week sprints and 2-month release cycles. Some of its infrastructure is in a private cloud’s vSphere environment, and part on AWS. The team uses Docker and Heroku, Octopus Deploy, Team City, Travis CI, and GitHub for DevOps and CI/CD. The enterprise software uses a mix of technologies including C#, .NET Core, SQL Server, MongoDB, Node.js, Angular, NServiceBus, and more. NCARB’s data practices use redshift, docker, and python, plus some visualization tools like Tableau.

The leader we are seeking will have a combination of extensive knowledge and technical expertise that includes in-depth experience as a software engineer, a successful record of leading enterprise level projects balanced with strong people skills building relationships and supporting team members in their technical growth while successfully developing and implementing sophisticated technology solutions, products and services. This is a “hands-on” role.  The senior manager is expected to participate in coding, peer and code reviews, as well as be responsible for giving technology directions to the various IS teams.

This individual will play a critical role in leading continuous improvement efforts, contributing to team growth and development, and fostering and maintaining a positive and empowering work environment. Duties will include:

  • Partner with the vice president on technology vision, strategy and organizational roadmap; lead and empower the engineering team on design, build, innovation and support of systems, applications and technology stacks; set positive example and tone for the team as part of a commitment to a strong culture aligned with our values.
  • Continually develop knowledge and understanding of NCARB’s programs, services, members and customers to lead development, delivery and continuous improvement of technology products and services that align business objectives and customer needs.
  • Build and foster strong relationships throughout NCARB to accomplish objectives and goals; promote healthy technology discussions that align objectives and solutions; and, manage expectations on execution of projects.
  • Help lead the team in advancing its technical knowledge and expertise.

Qualifications

At a minimum, you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or similar.
  • Eight or more years of in-depth software engineering work experience and three or more years in a software engineering leadership capacity.
  • Proficiency with .NET (4.5) environment, Microsoft Visual Studio, C#, WCF, SQL Server, distributing messaging e.g. NServiceBus, git for version control, and Xamarin for mobile, SPA applications and JS frameworks such as Angular or React, ASP.NET Web APIs, HTML and CSS frameworks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of agile software development methodologies, values, and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to engage with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with proven ability to lead and manage projects with high levels of technical and/or functional complexity.
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically gather relevant information from different sources to address an issue and make a prompt and insightful decision.
  • Ability to travel including weekends on occasion.

Ideally, you have:

  • Familiarity with continuous integration practices and principles; test driven development/design practices and principles; automated testing practices and principles; user acceptance testing and principles.
  • High level of flexibility, creativity and innovation.
  • Ability to set example and maintain a positive attitude and work environment in times of pressure.
  • Desire to help develop others and an interest or experience in coaching for growth and creating an empowered work environment.

It would be awesome if you had:

  • Familiarity with Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and other innovation methods.
  • Consulting experience.
